I’m a fitness instructor with experience in yoga, Pilates, step classes and water aerobics. I’ve spent more than 7 years studying Shaolin Kempo, and before that I took classes in Tae Kwon Do. During the last few years, I’ve lost more than 100 pounds and 6 dress sizes, and I’m still working to get to my goal weight. I also teach women’s self defense classes, and by day, I’m a marketing and fundraising professional at a hospital in New England. My yoga journey actually started back in 1995, when I took yoga for 2 years from a woman in Bangor, Maine. She was a traditional Hatha Yoga instructor who emphasized the serene nature of practice and finding your center and inner peace, in addition to the bodily improvements that accompany yoga. After working as a step-aerobics and water aerobics instructor over the last several years, I have a greater appreciation for what yoga can do for your joints and what a great conditioning workout it is. My classes still focus on the stillness…the inner serenity that comes with regular practice, but compared to my first teacher, the classes I teach are more upbeat, energetic, and playful. I believe in having fun while practicing with people you know and grow to love, and that energy is contagious!

I just saw your updates. So wonderful to read…I have felt that way about people ignoring others on crutches, in wheelchairs, etc. When I was first getting back into teaching 14 years ago, I worked as a 1-1 with a girl with cerebral palsey. My eyes were opened further than ever regarding people’s rudeness, or just inattentiveness to her situation. I, too, developed a great deal more patience than I had ever had in the past. Allison, I’m glad your foot is healing. Namaste’.
